Public Art of the University of Houston System (Public Art UHS) creates dynamic educational experiences in connection with its permanent collection, which is installed throughout the University’s campuses. Our program engages over 2000 K-12 students per year and is the largest Public Art Education Initiative in the nation. Public Art UHS is seeking a Graduate Assistant to assist in developing and executing various aspects of the program, including presenting object-based tours for various audiences, from students in grades K-12 to art-makers and art-seekers of all ages. The Graduate Assistant will also help facilitate and lead the CITE Grant STEAM Lab tours alongside the undergraduate cohort. In addition, the Graduate Assistant will support ongoing educational projects such as public programs, family guide development, and engagement with community groups.

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Under the supervision of the Director of Education and Community Engagement, Professor Debra Barrera and the Program Coordinator, Zoie Buske, the graduate assistant will plan and present engaging, object-based tours for students in grades K-12, and additional key audiences in our surrounding Houston community.
  • Participate in museum education trainings and conduct independent research on object-based teaching best practices and the Public Art UHS collection.   
  • Administer evaluation surveys to tour goers to collect feedback and track attendance and other data from visiting groups.
  • Help develop content for our “Create, here.” digital guides and instructional modules as well as any additional educational digital or paper materials. 
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of public programs such as studio workshops and artist talks.  
  • Identify and contact new audiences to engage in tour programming.
  • Attend regular meetings with Public Art UHS staff.
 

Skills/Qualifications: 

  • Motivated graduate student pursuing a degree from the University of Houston. Students from any subject area may apply.
  • Maintain regular hours between M-F during which K-12 field lessons will be scheduled. Occasional after-hours and weekend time may be required. Please note that most K-12 field lessons where we will need assistance usually take place between Wednesday-Friday mornings, 9AM-12noon.
  • Passionate about teaching and interested in sharing contemporary artworks with a variety of audiences.
  • Friendly and comfortable speaking in front of a large group.
  • Previous experience working with children preferred.  
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.  
 

Hours and Pay Rate 

  • 20 Hours/Week (required commitment)
  • $15/hr
