Lin Emery

(American, b. 1926)

Pastoral, 2011

Aluminum and stainless steel; 183 x 156 inches

Primarily focused on kinetic sculptures, the New Orleans-based Emery creates abstract works that rely on natural elements for movement. Pastoral uses a complex system of bearings to ensure the smooth, random movement of the leaf-like forms, allowing the wind to continuously change its shape. Its highly reflective surface makes the moving elements appear to vanish, visually merging the sculpture with the sky and its surroundings through their reflection.
