Although Ann Stautberg is trained as a printmaker and painter, her art career is focused on photography. Born in Houston, Stautberg received her BFA from Texas Christian University and her MA from the University of Dallas. The journey of her photography started with capturing images of Texas couples in dance halls and on dates. The big bee-hive hair and leather boots helped her capture parts of Texas culture in the 1970s. Later Stautberg began experimenting with translucent oils and would hand tint her black and white photographs. Perhaps appealing to her painting training, this technique allowed Stautberg to make unique images and gave her better control over what she wanted the viewer to feel. Up until 1993 all her works were only printed once, but with trends in photography art growing, Stautberg knew making editions of her pieces was the best for her career. Dedicated to her oeuvre, Stautberg would burn any test prints and pieces that were not worthy of being in her portfolio. She now lives and works in Galveston, Texas, capturing images along the coast. Stautberg also has public works in both the Houston and Dallas areas.
