Tim Glover

(American, b. 1957)

Healing Nature, 2003

Stainless Steel and Aluminum; Column: 612 x 168 inches diameter, canopy: 480 inches diameter

Delicate leaves surround both the outdoor column and indoor canopy of Tim Glover’s Healing Nature, making the beneficial and beautiful component of nature the focal point of the piece. The sculpture creates an atmosphere of goodwill, tranquility, and rejuvenation for the space. The indoor canopy hangs in quiet harmony with its 76 individually welded leaves. This is not Glover’s first public work in Houston. Cactus was completed in 1988 for Old Sixth Ward Park in Houston and is Glover’s first public art commission. Glover moved to Houston in 1986 and has been working here ever since. He received his BFA from Memphis College of Art and his MFA from the University of South Florida. Since then, he has given back to the community of Houston through public art but also through teaching. In 1997 Glover was a welding instructor at the University of Houston. He has also taught sculpture at the High School for Performing Arts in Houston and Houston Community College. He even received the Presidential Scholars Teacher Recognition Award from the Department of Education in 2000. Healing Nature is a commission piece focusing on leaves as the subject point. At night the outdoor column lights up to become a beacon for the campus. Blumenthal Sheet Metal Houston aided in the fabrication of the work.
