Helen Altman

(American, b. 1958)
Coyote Watching, 2009
Torch drawing on paper; 39 1/2 x 28 inches
Acquired in 2012

Using a blow torch, Altman makes remarkably detailed and delicate lines on paper to create this grouping of common, native Texas animals. She’s created a new way of drawing and depicting these loved and feared creatures. Altman is known to work with a variety of mediums, aiming to create realistic pieces that portray the natural world with a blatant absurdity in their artificiality.
