Janaki Lennie is an Australian artist, who spent many years in Houston while she obtained a M.F.A from the University of Houston. Her inspiration comes from the traditional Western landscape paintings, but rather than deserts and cacti, Lennie makes the sky her subject. Taking the landscape back to its truest sense of place, she works in layers to create these pieces. While her inspiration comes from the tradition of romantic landscape painting, it is free of the nostalgia associated with it. The hazy colors evoke chemical and light pollution. The imagery is a literal nod to Houston’s skyline, chemical plants, and freeway lights. These paintings lure the viewer in and offer an opportunity to reconsider the relationship with the natural world and the city’s built environment. There are ten pieces in Lennie’s Provisional Space—Houston, each showing a different experience from the view of Houston’s sky.
