Robert Andrew Parker
(American, b. 1927)
Sunrise, from the portfolio America: The Third Century, 1976
Lithograph; 30 x 22 inches
Acquired in 1981
Known for painting and prints, Robert Andrew Parker has also produced set designs for operas and films and illustrated over forty children’s books. He was even recruited to be Vincent Van Gogh’s hands in the 1956 MGM file Lust for Life. Parker’s works are held in collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and many other prestigious museums and galleries. His watercolors are able to combine areas of pure color with the designs of silhouettes and shapes. Taking his subject matter mostly from the natural world, Parker simplifies the imagery seen in nature to produce a unique landscape or story. Such as in Sunrise, he combines the mythical and actual to produce a piece that is both abstract and realistic.
This portfolio of prints demonstrates the depth and breadth of art making in 1976 America. Commissioned for the 1976 celebration of the American Bicentennial, it includes works by James Rosenquist, Robert Rauschenberg, Roy Lichtenstein, Allan D’Arcangelo, William Bailey, Edward Ruscha, Christo, James Brooks, Costantino Nivola, Velox Ward, Raymond Saunders, and Ben Schonzeit.
